The Forêt de Saou is about 150 km south of Grenoble, in the département de la Drôme. Why did we decide to go there? Well, it suddenly got cold in Grenoble lately, and since there's not enough snow yet, we should head south to at least warm up a bit. So I was cruising the maps the week before and found this curious feature on Google Maps. It was so intriguing, I decided to go check it out by moutain bike. I have no idea how such a formation could be created...

Turns out it's a basin about 10 km long and 2 km wide with a protected forest in the middle and some hiking trails and forest roads leading around the crest. We arrived at 9am ... not a soul in sight! We had the whole basin to ourselves!

So much for the warm south! First signs of snow above us. Ha.

View of the basin from nearly one of the apexes.

My toes finally started defrosting at about this point (2 hours into the ride).

Lunch in the freezing cold sun of southern France.

Beautiful sun, though!
